The Taking of the 2010 World Cup

How it all came together!
When it was announced that the 2010 World Cup would be held in South Africa, it was greeted in several different attitudes, by different groups of people.
For many it must be said, there was a feeling that this country, which has seen changes, dramas and conflict in so many different areas, and was knowingly, biting off more than it could chew! That the expertise and "know how" could only be given in "other countries" and FIFA were placing their golden football in the wrong arena. Others had the exhilaration of knowing that this event, which was a mirage only a few years ago, was actually going to be staged in their country!
However, an underlying thought of the large percentage of the population, was one like a niggling headache. It was like a fear and one that is experienced constantly in this beautiful, conflicting country. That fear is known as "greed". Many excuses are made for politicians, when they are revealed in various forms of corruption. In the past relatively few years, there have been revelations made by an aware and astute media, of the Peoples' "representatives". No position has been too high or revered to be immune from the fear.
To a generally now cynical population, it had almost become an acceptable fact, that their elected representatives, their masters and the lackeys, were entitled to scrounge, steal and grab whatever they could. They presumably were above the law and deserved it apparently, by reason of their part in the "struggle". What an opportunity this World Cup will be, for an elite group to really have many cakes and eat them all? The theorizing on how and what they were going to reap, made for some very interesting conversations and discussions.
As the time passed and the countdown ticked over to the great day, the media, corporate organizations and small businesses, began reviewing opportunities. So called celebrities, started making money by holding, or taking part in seminars, promoting the fantastic money making opportunities that were available to anyone, with spare accommodation and vehicles. By their reasoning, this was the chance for anyone to become almost an instant millionaire!
Whether this was believed or not, was not important. Amid all the hype, waffle and media hysteria, a growing awareness and animation was apparent amongst the People. The media were expressing their expectations and fears for the repercussions of holding this event. This in turn was fuelled by the participation of the population, who were now seeing the preparations taking place. Whole residential areas were being changed for ever. Space age looking stadiums were starting to materialize, new road and train systems, South Africa was reaching out to the World and had accepted the challenge to produce one of the greatest spectacles ever!
Clocks and calendars were now items of great importance. They showed the days, hours, minutes and seconds steadily passing by and the time left for South Africa to present its creation to the population of the world. Excitement, anticipation and most important Belief, was now transparent everywhere in South Africa. Positive reports of progress towards the ultimate goal were reported every day. Crime, a scourge of this country, was now being dealt with by a newly motivated Police force, with exceptional results. From the politicians, there appeared a new attitude of accepting a situation that was way beyond their manipulations and control. They had been made aware, that they were now serving the People, who were on a mission to make this, the greatest World Cup ever!
From every part of this country, the People were now joining in a common cause. Any bitterness from history and the present was being eroded by a new euphoria sweeping the land. Now the songs were being sung and a new dimension was added to the South African World Cup scene - the Vuvuzela! This instrument created its own controversy, with warnings of possible damage to ears, the interference with verbal instructions from the bench to the players and the noise like a massive swarm of bees. However, it became inherent in the preparations and was adopted as an audio South African symbol of support.
At last, the great day arrived! "Kick Off" World Cup 2010, a time that will go down in South African history. The anticipation of the People was at fever pitch. They could hardly believe that this event was now actually going to happen and they were a part of it. The tension throughout the country was a tangible thing. Flags of various countries could be seen flying from buildings and streaming from vehicles. As the zero hour approached, an almost uncanny silence descended around residential neighborhoods, shopping centers and the country generally.
Strangers met and mingled at the Fan Parks, public bars, pubs and restaurants to share this moment. In private homes, groups of the People gathered with friends, colleagues and family to share this momentous event. A sense of the surreal prevailed. Feelings of pride that in spite of some trials and tribulations from a variety of sources, together with some apathy and negativity from sections of the media, it was now going to happen! Some employers, as involved and excited as their workers sacrificed profits and closed their businesses early, to allow for travelling time.
The rest as the old saying goes is history. This World Cup has become an event upon which benchmarks are made. In the face of sometimes mockery and ridicule, from certain other countries and their mouthpieces and even from within South Africa, the People decided that it would happen and be a success. Every person from every walk of life was a part of it. Their warm welcomes to visitors, positive attitudes, their contagious laughter and enthusiasm made sure nothing and no one would dampen the spirit of this, their World Cup.
Naturally, it was a disappointment when the South African team was eliminated. However, the loss was quickly dismissed by this now totally football mad nation. All that mattered was that the World Cup went on and the success and excitement kept growing. This adaptable and extremely resilient nation then decided that they would choose their personal teams to support. They did so, with possibly even greater passion and enthusiasm, to the delight of all other football supporters.
After the final match had been played, there was a sense of loss. As if an integral part of the peoples lives had been taken away. This will be a temporary sensation as the injection of this massive hype, gradually settles into a comfortable memory slot. What will always remain, will be the extraordinary realization that because of a ball being kicked around, a nation's People found themselves and each other and they enjoyed the experience. The rest of the world joined South Africa in their magic time. Perhaps they will sometimes reminisce with a sense of awe, at what they saw happen and became a part of. The People of South Africa will certainly remember how they took the 2010 World Cup and made it a great part of their history!
May it be with them and remembered, always!
